8-bit Christmas Ornament Craft for Kids

With Black Friday coming up I encouraged our boys to start a Christmas list. I gave them some toy store books to flip through and reading their lists cracked us up. This year we are trying to avoid anything electronic because managing screen time has been difficult the past few months. Our oldest son Wyatt is in a class that uses tablets most of the time and even all of his homework is online. Managing the screen time is always hard because while they are supposed to be doing homework we look over to see them playing a game instead!

Have you seen the Qixels commercial on TV lately? If you have young children who watch any television at all I'm not sure how you could have missed it. My boys watch it and say 'we want those' every time it comes on. I wasn't surprised when Qixels were on Mason's Christmas list because he is into 8-bit characters and games right now. What Mason didn't know is that I already had a whole lot of Qixel fun waiting for them. The other day the boys and their cousin were playing and I pulled them out. All of the kids' eyes lit up like Christmas had come early. They were so excited to see what everything did. I think the Fuse Blaster and Turbo Dryer were the biggest hit.

Each of the kids quickly claimed their own tray and filled them with Qixels so they could start creating. It was a proud creative mom moment when they all decided to create their own design instead of using the templates provided. Mason even got super creative and made a Christmas Tree ornament which he is sending to a secret someone for an ornament exchanged I signed the boys up for. Both of the boys are now on a Qixel kick and each day when they have come home from school and finished their homework we bust them out. It has been so much better than having to lecture them on how long they can play on their tablets.

Isn't that tree genius? Mason did the branches and ornaments. Last year Mason was having trouble with fine motor skills at school. We didn't notice it at home but we quickly started working on it. Qixels are great for improving fine motor skills!

I love Qixels because there is no heat required to fuse them together. The boys spray their finished designs with water and then put it in the Turbo Dryer. After they sit for a while their Qixel creations are ready to handle. These make their little 8-bit hearts fill with joy! Do you have any 8-bit lovin' kiddos?

The kids also loved creating 8-bit characters. They made this Viking looking man and then used the stand to display him in their bedroom.

For Mason's ornament we added twine through the little hole he made to transform his tree into a tree ornament. Bottom line is Qixels have been a hit around here and I have been dying to get some alone time with them too!
