Au Gratin Onions

Do you love French Onion Soup? French Onion Soup is one of my all time faves, so it would come as no surprise that I also love this recipe for Au Gratin Onions. When I was growing up my Grandma and Grandpa owned a summer spot in Lake Mills, WI. My entire family would go up there on the weekends and we would all enjoy the lake, family, and good food. One of their neighbors brought this dish over, and my mom has been making in since!

You need:

  • 6 onions
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup mozzarela/parmesan cheese blend
  • 1/2 cup parmesan (in the shake bottle)
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup of beef broth

I made a half batch, therefore I only used four onions. I seem to be the only one in the house that eats this glorious side dish!

Thinly slice all of your onions and sauté them in the butter until tender.

Then place them in an oven safe dish. In another bowl mix broth, milk, and flour. Pour the milk mixture over the onions.

Spread the cheeses on top and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Oh look at this cheesy onion au gratin yumminess! Makes me want some right now!!

Makes a great side on your plate of steak dinner.

Glue Gun Burns

Well folks… I officially have burned my thumb more times than I can count with hot glue from my glue gun! It may be red and throbbing for the rest of my days. For my sake – I hope it goes away soon. Problem is – I’m far from done with my glue gun, so I may just have a throbbing thumb for a few weeks to come!

Why the burns you ask? My friend and I decided to team up and do our first craft show. She makes awesome bows! Visit her facebook page HERE!

I on the other hand will try anything, so since she is going to be selling bows, and we will be at the same table, I decided to do some hair clips, earrings, and necklaces. It will be a table full of accessories!

We just decided to do the show last week… and it is October 29th and 30th. We have 5 weeks to bang out all of our items, and come up with a way to display everything!

The past two days I have been, sewing, cutting, gluing, and I am in desperate need of a shower!

I lucked out yesterday because Mason took an hour and a half nap, so I was able to really focus!

Otherwise, I have been trying to do all of this in between breakfast, laundry, lunch, and life. Did I mention we are potty training too? Mason was doing really well with telling me when he had to go peepee. So, when we ran out of diapers last Thursday I decided I wasn’t buying ANY MORE! There have been quite a few messes (the floor has seen its fair share of puddles this week), but he is doing really good overall. He only peed the bed twice so far.

Here he is wasting time on the potty while we are waiting….

So, I’m back to the glue gun.

A Taste of Things to Come

In only a few weeks I will be kicking off the Second Annual ‘31 Days of Halloween’. Each day in October I will be posting a craft, inspiration, tutorial, recipe, or giveaway! I’m super excited and I hope you are too! Here are a few pictures of what is to come starting on October 1st!

Gosh I just can not wait! I’ve been so tempted to start posting early… but then I stop myself!

We are off to take the boys off to play in the rain. We are having any amazing rainy day free of thunder and lightening. Mike has been begging me to let them go out and play… I’ll share pictures later!

Someone Like You

Today I attended a funeral and they played the song ‘Someone Like You’ by Adele. Though I have heard it before (and liked it) – I never really stopped to listen to the words until now. What an amazing song! If you get a chance – listen to the words.

My husband is in law enforcement, and one of his fellow co-workers passed away late last week. The funeral was unlike anything I have ever seen. The brotherhood between these men and women was overwhelmingly apparent.

Frank was 33, and an all-around amazing guy. He was super nice to everyone he encountered, upbeat, and though I didn’t know him all that well – I know he made an impact over so many peoples lives.

‘Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.’ –Psalm 23:4

My Husband’s Peirogies

I mentioned a few weeks ago that my husband is a mean machine when it comes to making breakfast. What I didn’t mention was his knack for doctoring up frozen Peirogies!

Every few weeks I pick up some of Mrs. T’s Four Cheese Peirogies from the frozen food isle of the grocery store. I keep them in my freezer for a night when I don’t feel up to cooking. Then when that night comes – I let Mike know he has dinner duty!

Maybe you have had these before – but I bet you haven’t had them the way we eat them! Mike sautés them to perfection!

  • Box of Mrs. T’s Pierogies
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 1/2 Onion thinly sliced
  • Garlic Powder
  • Everglade’s Seasoning
  • Sour Cream (optional for dipping)

Mike adds the butter to our skillet and adds the onions. Sauté the onion until tender. Then add the frozen peirogies. As they are sautéing sprinkle on the seasonings – flipping them often. When the peirogies are golden brown and look delicious remove them to a plate with paper towels. Then EAT!

This is so easy that your husband or significant other can do it too! If my husband can do this – anyone can. Just sayin’

Nutella–Need I Say More

My husband loves LOVES LOVES Nutella.  I must admit that before I met him, I didn’t know what it was. I had never seen it, heard of it, or tried it. One lick and I was hooked! My husband loves it so much that he can slather it on a hot dog but and inhale it.

One thing he loves just as much – Ferrero Rocher chocolates. It is a known fact that they are one of his favorites. For Christmas his family and mine load his stocking with Ferrero Rocher.

So, for his birthday I knew just what I was going to bake him – a Nutella and Ferrero Rocher cupcake which I saw on Pinterest. There was only one problem with the pin – I couldn’t track down the recipe! I improvised and made it up!

What you need:

  • Chocolate cake mix (and ingredients from the recipe on the box)
  • Nutella
  • Ferrero Rocher chocolates

First bake the cupcakes according to the directions on the box.

Then let them cool… resist the urge to scarf one down!

Once they are cool, use a spoon to scoop out a small bit of cake from the center. You can throw it out – or eat it! I’m sure you know what I did with it? Who lets perfectly good cake go to waste?

Once you scoop it out, fill the hollowed out area with a whopping heap of Nutella! Don’t skimp my friends! Then top it off with a Ferrero Roche chocolate!

Now don’t these look divine?

Salivating yet? Want a taste? Bikini season is over! Get yourself some of these chocolate goodness!

How Clever!

Lately I have come across some pretty smart ideas on Pinterest! I even named a pin board ‘clever’ to store all of the wonderful tips and tricks. I thought I would share some of these ideas with you! I’m sure you will see at least one clever idea which makes you go – ‘HUH!?”

Click on the pictures to be directed to the source!

Rubber band to stop paint buildup on the lip of the can.

Ankle weights to keep the stroller from tipping.

Use a dust pan to fill something that doesn’t fit in the sink.

Dryer sheets remove soap buildup on glass shower doors.

Straighten your ribbon!

Don’t peel the egg – cut right through it and scoop it out! I totally need to try this because I am HORRIBLE at getting the shells to peel off when I boil eggs!

Freeze leftover wine to use in cooking. Who says there will be any leftover?

Freeze green onions and use them as needed.

Make your own repeating pattern using Photoshop and these steps.

Now for my own personal ‘Clever’ ideas…

Use an old plate hanger to hang jewelry instead. Found this one at Goodwill!

Squeegee your shower after every use to keep the glass clean!
